February 14th is Valentine’s Day – the day of love. While many think that means they must celebrate romantic love, I believe that all types of love should be celebrated – including the love given freely and fully by dogs. Dogs are actually the perfect Valentines. So whether you have a significant other or not, consider showing some love to your pup and making them your top Valentine, because every day, you are their greatest love.
Here are five reasons why dogs make the best Valentines:
1. Dogs Love Unconditionally
Who is the happiest person in the house when you get home? The dog. Every time. Dogs are excited that you exist. In fact, they LOVE that you exist. You are literally the best thing in the world to them.
Dogs follow you from room to room so that they are the first thing you see with every turn you make. They wait by the door, always excited for you to come out. Sometimes, they even wait by the shower for you to reappear, and when you do, they greet you, tail wagging and ready to continue by your side.
Even when you get a little upset with them, they instantly forgive you and would do anything to make you happy. Who else gives you that much attention and unconditional love?
2. Dogs Protect You
I read a statistic once that criminals are less likely to break into your house or attack you in public if they see a dog. That is because dog’s are fierce protectors. They care about your safety with vigor. Dogs are willing to sacrifice themselves in order to protect you.
You know how sometimes people say they would take a bullet for someone? Dogs literally would. Finally, someone who actually lives up to what they say! (or in this case, what they show).
3. Dogs Are Professional Kissers
Name anyone who loves to kiss more than dogs? I’ll wait.
Dogs love to give licks as often as possible, regardless of whether you want them or are prepared for them (and they are the only ones who can do it without asking). Plus, if you are feeling down or sad, dogs can instantly heal your heart with a kiss.
In my case, Jeter prefers to push his nose to my cheek while Caesar takes every chance he can to lick unsuspecting “victims” in the face with his Gene Simmons-sized tongue. It may be gross, but you gotta admit: it sure does make you giggle and it makes your heart swell with joy. Plus, dogs can get away with it; it would be weird for a human to lick your face.
4. Dogs Are The Best Cuddlers
When you are sad and want to be alone, but not totally alone, a dog absolutely gets that. They have a sixth sense for human emotions, and just when you need them, there they are with a kiss and a cuddle. And, boy, are they the best cuddlers.
If you’ve never laid in bed or on the couch with a dog curled up by you, you’re missing out. Not only do they provide warmth in the winter, but they are great for hugs. Dogs give hugs freely and without condition. Their hugs are always full of love. But remember, not every dog loves hugs. Always be aware of your dog’s boundaries!
It’s really impossible to feel so sad with a dog who provides kisses and cuddles.
5. Dog’s Are The Greatest Listeners
No one listens better than a dog because, honestly, that’s all they can do! Dogs don’t talk back (at least not with words). They listen and provide comfort when you need it.
If you’ve never talked to your dog, first of all, you’re probably lying, but if you really haven’t, you should give it a try. They are the best secret keepers, and sometimes, if you’re really going on and on at them, they give you a cute little head tilt.
Seriously, try talking to your dog sometime; they understand your feelings better than you know.
If you’re “alone” this Valentine’s Day, spend it with your dog – honestly, who better to spend it with anyway? If you don’t have a dog, visit your local shelter. The dogs there are more than willing to give you kisses, cuddles, listen to you, and show you how happy they are that you are spending time with them.
Dogs are love.
