You Are The Energy You Surround Yourself With

Posted on January 20, 2020February 16, 2020 by Kirsten Barnhart

NOTE: This blog is just a rambling of my thoughts and feelings after a long week. Read if you’re interested. If you’re looking for prime dog content, check out my other fabulous posts!

I just finished up my first week of the spring semester. I challenged myself to get my work done, my homework done, find time to read a “for fun” book, continue to make time for my dogs, and to hit my 10,000 step daily FitBit goal. Somehow, I did all of that, all while remaining fairly positive.

My week in photos: I took this selfie on Tuesday after opening up my good mail from Bernie. #BernieSanders2020

While I accomplished all my goals for the week (and so far for the year), it wasn’t pretty. Somedays I walked Caesar after midnight in the freezing cold. Somedays I got my steps in between classes or before I even “started” my day. Somedays, I barely hit the 10,000 step goal. Like I said, it wasn’t always pretty, but I still did it and that made me feel good. Oh, and I also managed to write and read quite a bit, which is pretty unavoidable as a news editor and an English student.

While I felt happy about checking off my goals, I was pretty tired after it all. There wasn’t a single day during the week where I got more than 6.5 hours of sleep. (I did manage to catch up on it all over the weekend at least.) The fact is, something had to give if I wanted to make it all work. Plus, I ended a nine hour work shift on Friday with my first ever migraine that caused me to lose vision – which was incredibly scary. Still, I was pretty happy to get to the end of the week and let out a sigh of relief. “Only 16 more weeks,” I told Dakota on Friday.

My week in photos: Breakfast with Caesar Sunday morning. I’m glad my schedule allows for more of this.

Is this schedule maintainable? I’m going to guess not, but that doesn’t mean I won’t continue to try. If you know me personally, I’m a pretty go-go-go person. It’s hard for me to sit still. During winter break, even though I worked over 40 hours, I was so bored that I read several novels and walked both dogs more than what’s typical.

During my busy time, I try to remain pretty positive through it all and usually that is the main struggle for me. If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I had a pretty depressing summer and fall in 2019. I fell into a pretty bad depression and I know that a large part of that was due to the company I was keeping and those around me. As a person that is constantly busy, it’s vital for me to attract the energy I want to give back to the world. Late in 2019, I realize that this would be vital in 2020 as I transitioned into a full-time student.

I do things to help me keep focused and to help my mind out. I make lists upon lists to make sure I remember what needs done. This week, in particular, I set goals for myself and it was important for me to reach them all, if only for one week. It proved to me that what I want is possible, if I push myself.

My week in photos: Keeping a healthy mind, to me, means always reading for fun, in addition to whatever you have to read for work. This week I’m reading “Becoming” by Michelle Obama.

There were nights this week where I wanted to just sit and stare at the wall (which I finally found time to do on Friday night). But for the most part lately, I’ve been in a pretty good mood. Since the end of the year, I’ve been taking CBD oil in hopes to calm myself down. I’ve also tried to distance myself from people with negative energy who try to absorb my good energy. I can’t talk highly enough about how doing that last thing has improved my view on everything, even my job.

When you’re like me and taking on a lot of work, it’s important to put your mental health first. Make sure your mind is happy or else it will reflect on everything you do. With a negative mindset, even thinking about any type work can feel exhausting. With a happy, positive, and healthy mind, you can get a lot done before feeling worn down.

If you’ve made it to this point, thank you for taking the time to listen to me go on about my week. If you’re feeling worn down, remember to push the pause button and let your mind recharge. If you’re dealing with a person who sucks your positive energy out and only feeds negative energy back to you, remember that it’s okay to put boundaries in place – no matter who that person is, don’t let them ruin your week and your mind. You are the energy you surround yourself with, so make sure you surround yourself with good, positive people.

Can you just orbit my desk at work? Lol I need your positive energy!!
Glad to see you’re so motivated for being a full time student. (:

Also I like when you do blog posts about yourself as well as doggo stuff. It’s a good mix!

About

I am Kirsten and this is a space where I share the adventures I have with my dogs.

TPAR started as a blog about my life with Caesar and Jeter. It’s developed into a place where I can share hidden gems in local communities to take your dog, advice and tips I’ve learned along the way, and a space where sometimes I just get the things in my head out.

Since I began this blog, Jeter has passed and Gatsby has entered my life. Today, I continue to tell the stories of the dogs in my life. I hope you’ll find something useful here and grow to love taking your dogs on adventures too.
